Opioids are prescribed to treat pain. With prolonged use, these pain-relieving effects may lessen, and pain may become worse. Over time, the body develops a dependence to the pain pills. Symptoms of addiction include uncontrollable cravings and an inability to control use even when it begins to have negative effects on a person’s relationships, occupation or finances.

Withdrawal symptoms appear when intake is decreased, which makes it difficult to stop using. Addiction occurs when this dependence begins to affect daily life. Taking an ever-increasing amount can have a negative impact on health and can even result in death.

At Axis, we offer a myriad of treatment options, taking the patients unique situation, along with past treatment, into account. Whether it is through the use of Buprenorphine (Suboxone, Subutex, etc…), Naltrexone or abstinence, we understand that recovery is a journey, and are prepared to stand alongside you as you pave a better path for yourself.  We have therapists ready for referral, along with the best intensive outpatient program in the area if a higher level of care is needed.

When it comes to addiction, alcohol is the number one most abused substance in Louisiana. Drinking is a part of our culture, and as such, it’s easily available for people to access. This environment of enablement unfortunately means that abuse often goes unrecognized.

Alcohol use disorder, also known as alcoholism, is a pattern of use that involves behavioral problems affecting your ability to control drinking habits. These problems may cause you to become preoccupied with alcohol, push you to continue using alcohol even when it causes issues, force you to drink more to get the same effect or produce withdrawal symptoms when you abruptly stop drinking.

Some people are able to moderate their use. However, some are unable to do so, even when continued use disrupts their relationships, jobs, health and finances. Those who suffer from alcohol use disorder either binge drink (drinking five or more drinks within two hours) or drink daily, causing significant health and safety risks.

At Axis, we provide direct treatment for alcohol use disorder. Whether through medications (Naltrexone, Vivitrol, Acomprosate or Disulfiram), individualized therapy or referral to a higher level of care (intensive outpatient treatment or acute psychiatric hospitalization), our team is ready to assist you on the path to recovery.

Smoking is one of the leading causes of death around the world. The nicotine within each cigarette is highly addictive, and the dependence it creates in its users often leads to severe health complications.  With that considered, this also makes it one of the most preventable causes of death.

With the advent of e-cigarettes, this problem has only worsened. Even with ever-improving public health and clinical interventions, there’s no getting around the fact that nicotine is a very addictive substance. It arrives more quickly in the brain than any other tobacco product, and it excites neurons in a way that makes it difficult to turn away from without social or medical assistance.

At Axis, we provide the coaching and therapy needed to break away from an attachment to nicotine, and are ready to stand with you on the path to recoery.
